Getting your CDL certification is a structured process that takes 4-10 weeks from start to finish. Here's exactly what you need to do in 2026.

Step 1: Meet Eligibility Requirements

Before starting CDL training, confirm you meet these basic requirements:

• Age: 18 for intrastate (within your state) or 21 for interstate driving
• Driver License: Valid standard driver license in your state
• Medical: Pass a DOT physical exam (valid for 2 years)
• Background: No disqualifying criminal convictions
• English: Sufficient to communicate and read road signs

Step 2: Get Your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)

Visit your state DMV and pass the written knowledge tests:

• General Knowledge test (required for all CDL classes)
• Combination Vehicles test (Class A only)
• Air Brakes test (if your vehicle has air brakes)
• Additional endorsement tests as needed (HazMat, Tanker, etc.)

Your CLP allows you to practice driving with a licensed CDL holder. You must hold it for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Step 3: Complete ELDT Training
