Understanding Heat Illness Prevention Requirements

Key regulatory references for workplace heat safety

OSHA Heat Illness Prevention Campaign
"Every year, dozens of workers die and thousands more become ill while working in extreme heat or humid conditions. Under OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing workplaces free of known safety hazards, which includes protecting workers from extreme heat."

Water

Provide cool drinking water accessible to all workers. Encourage at least 8 oz every 15-20 minutes. Do not wait for thirst.

Rest

Schedule frequent rest breaks in cool or shaded areas. Adjust work-rest cycles based on heat index and workload intensity.

Shade

Provide shade structures or air-conditioned areas for rest breaks. Cool-down areas must accommodate all workers on break.

Critical Warning: New Worker Risk

Workers in their first 1-2 weeks on the job account for a disproportionate share of heat fatalities. Proper acclimatization (7-14 days of gradual exposure) is the most important prevention measure. Never assign full workloads to unacclimatized workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs heat stress awareness training?

All workers who perform duties in hot environments — outdoors or indoors. This includes construction, agriculture, landscaping, warehousing, manufacturing, kitchen, and delivery workers. Supervisors responsible for these workers also need training.

Is heat stress training required by OSHA?

While OSHA does not have a specific heat stress standard, the General Duty Clause requires employers to protect workers from recognized hazards including heat. OSHA's National Emphasis Program specifically targets heat-related workplace hazards, and citations are issued regularly.

What are the signs of heat stroke?

Heat stroke signs include: body temperature above 104°F, hot red DRY skin (no sweating), rapid strong pulse, confusion, slurred speech, and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency — call 911 immediately.

What is acclimatization and why is it important?

Acclimatization is the gradual adaptation of the body to working in heat over 7-14 days. New workers should start at 20% workload on Day 1 and increase by 20% daily. Unacclimatized workers are at the highest risk for heat illness.

How long do I have to complete the course?

You have lifetime access. Complete at your own pace — most users finish in one 1-hour session. Progress is saved automatically so you can pause and resume anytime.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Upon completion of all 4 modules and quizzes (70% minimum passing score), you receive an instant downloadable certificate for compliance records and employer documentation.
