Understanding Dry Ice Regulations
Key regulatory references for dry ice handling and transportation
"Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice), when offered for transportation or transported by aircraft or water, must be packed in packagings designed and constructed to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas to prevent a buildup of pressure that could rupture the packaging."View full regulation at eCFR.gov →
DOT Classification
Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods, UN 1845. Must be labeled and documented for all shipments.
OSHA Requirements
General Duty Clause requires employers to protect workers from recognized hazards including CO2 exposure and cold burns.
IATA (Air Transport)
Airline shipments have quantity limits per package and require crew notification. Specific packing instructions apply.
Dry ice sublimates into CO2 gas, which is an asphyxiant. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, CO2 accumulation can displace oxygen to life-threatening levels without any visible warning. Always ensure adequate ventilation when handling or storing dry ice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs dry ice safety training?
Anyone who handles, stores, ships, or works near dry ice should receive safety training. This includes warehouse workers, shipping personnel, lab technicians, food handlers, medical supply staff, and anyone in logistics who deals with cold chain shipping.
Is dry ice considered hazardous material?
Yes. The DOT classifies dry ice as a Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Good (UN 1845). It requires specific labeling, packaging, and documentation when shipped. OSHA also considers it a workplace hazard requiring proper training and PPE.
What PPE is required for handling dry ice?
At minimum: insulated cryogenic gloves, safety goggles or face shield, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes. Regular work gloves or latex gloves do NOT provide adequate protection against the extreme cold (-109.3°F).
Can dry ice cause asphyxiation?
Yes. As dry ice sublimates, it produces CO2 gas that displaces oxygen. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, oxygen levels can drop to dangerous levels. This is the most serious hazard of dry ice and has caused fatalities.
How long do I have to complete the course?
You have lifetime access to the course. Complete it at your own pace — pause and resume at any time. Your progress is saved automatically. Most users complete it in a single 1-hour session.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion of all 4 modules and quizzes (70% minimum passing score), you receive an instant, downloadable certificate. The certificate is audit-ready and documents your training.
